App navigation strategy
Following initial analysis, I began working on the app structure. The initial version included 6 sections:
Invest – browse properties and study detailed information about them. Put them in Cart.
Cart – purchase tokens.
Portfolio – see short analytics and manage purchased tokens.
Finances – view transaction history, payments, manage dividends.
Learn – access FAQ, educational materials and news.
Account – manage user account, security settings, and verification. Access quick support chat.

Optimization 1: The Cart was integrated into the Invest flow

This decision was based on several facts and UX hypotheses:
This decision was based on several facts and UX hypotheses:
No need to track back to Cart that often. The purchase process would be a part of the thoughtful investment process, unlike making impulsive buys on common marketplace platforms like Amazon and so on. So the Cart can be accessed from the future Invest page.
Product owner noted that only a few properties would be available for purchase for up to the first years of product life. So purchases would be infrequent in early years.
Therefore, user behavior for the first years of product life is expected to be focused on using the portfolio, checking token statuses, and engaging with dividends.

I asked my team to plan A/B testing if more content would be needed to show after the MVP stage. This will help us decide whether to keep portfolio and financial content combined or separated to avoid overloading the page.

Final navigation
As a result, app navigation core was optimized from 6 to 4 main sections:
Invest – browse, explore, access the cart.
Portfolio – see short analytics, manage owned tokens and financial operations.
Learn – access FAQ, educational materials, news and updates.
Account – manage settings, access support.

Wireflow
Once the initial navigation logic was approved, I composed a unified wireflow with the navigation structure, rough prototypes, and annotations. This helped me, the team and stakeholders to ensure that we all shared the same view and had a clear understanding of the structure and key features.

Constraints from stakeholders
📌 Maintain continuity of style with the Headway broker platform.
📌 Use a green-themed palette for freshness symbolism.
📌 Create a unified design system for NOVA and Headway to ensure design consistency.
📌 Complete Authorization flow UI ASAP so developers can start working immediately.

…and solutions
To address these tasks, I recommended stakeholders the quickest and most cost-effective solution: to modify existing UI elements of the Headway brokerage platform to meet NOVA's needs instead of creating a design system from scratch.
This approach accelerated the process: I extended existing UI elements into complete components for a scalable design system based on tokens and libraries.
But still there was a question to solve: how to make one design system suitable for two products at once? The solution details I got described here:

In short, I solved this experimentally, by using the newest Figma feature by that day – modes for variables. This decision enabled me to maintain the continuity of the Headway style, ensured design consistency and reduced layout assembly time by at least 30% in comparison with the old process.

Sketches and color options
Sketches and color options

First sketches
After sketching, I designed several prototypes for NOVA using new components.
I immersed myself in the search for a balanced color solution and presented 38 color schemes, including 12 green palettes. This variety helped us to explore different options that were not discussed yet and to determine if having the green toned accent would be the right preferance.

Voting for final color option
During the presentation to the product owner and stakeholders, we defined expectations more precisely. After two iterations of discussions, we narrowed the choices from 38 to 8 preferred ones.
Would you guess my favorite one? 🙂

Final options met all formal requirements, but there was a debate among stakeholders about choosing the most aborable option, so we initiated an internal company vote to find a "winner".
The result was unexpectedly pleasant: my favourite option won the voting! And for a good reason: it has a fresh cyber neon green – cool undertoned, youthful and fresh, symbolizing cybersecurity and reflecting the modern and solid technologies on which the product is based.

Hi-fidelity prototypes
To craft and test prototypes at the place, I utilized ready-made elements from new Design System. I combined a variety of content ideas to show how we can potentially approach the design and user flow.
We iteratively refined the best options of content in terms of development resources and users needs.
Next I included interactivity for initial user testing.

When designing NOVA screen content, I made further adjustments live in the prototypes, creating Figma branches that gradually shaped into the final design.
After a couple of user testing rounds and minor fixes the prototypes were approved, and it was only a refinement required from designer's side to bring design to development. It took a couple of hours to fix resizeability of auto-layouts where needed.

The role of Design System in prototyping
Design System have streamlined the evolution of layouts from prototypes to final UI screens, reducing the time required by ~35% compared to the old process.
Previously, the design process involved creating a black-and-white prototype that needed approval before being restyled into the final UI. Designers had to build the same interfaces twice: initially as sketches with temporary UI elements, and then again with the final UI elements.

Authorisation flow
The detailed design of each flow began with the authorisation process. Stakeholders required this flow to be inherited from the main Headway product with minimal changes to the UX, allowing only small optimizations due to very limited dev resources. The design needed to be finalized and ready for development ASAP.
Thanks to preliminary work on finalizing the main components of the design system, I accomplished this challenge in 5 days:
Composed layouts for all flow screens.
Made and approved necessary adjustments due to changes in the technical flow, in coordination with the backend developer and product manager.
Approved content adjustments with the copywriter.
Created and tested an interactive prototype of the Sign Up/Log In flow on a group of 16 users.
Fully prepared and handed layouts over to development.
As I got some extra time saved, I made an additional research to identify any existing UX problems with the current flow.

Lessons learned
🧠 Thinking big upfront helped us to design a scalable product. Closely collaborating with devs in daily meetings, we implemented flexible solutions at the design stage, anticipating potential changes and functionality growth. This approach ensured that our solution won't require expensive redevelopment if design changed.
🌱 Monitoring even beta versions of newest tools can save significant time and money. For existing products, new tools help to reassess values and open opportunities for processes refinement.
👀 Even when inheriting successful solutions, vigilance is crucial: trust but verify. Analyzing the inherited authorisation flow for UX issues, even without a targeted task, provided useful feedbacks, identifying potential problems early in the new product's development.
🗣️ This project demonstrated the power of collaboration, enabling us to launch a new product successfully without any critical design changes and reassess our design processes, improving them to meet resource requirements.
💎 Designers should conduct additional quality control of design implementation early and gradually during the whole development process. The optimal time in this case was during the second iteration of QA engineer's work for each part of the app. I maintained communication with QA and assisted with reviews. On that stage we listed tons of microbugs in design, so they were fixed ASAP and not inherited in the next scenarios developed.
